Jedediah
Smith & Big John Turner:
During the day
the Indians came from their hiding places on all sides of this strange
group of men and animals, watched them intently....The Indians were
alarmed for their own safety. None dared expose himself....Much
talk took place....
The man (Big
JohnTurner) wore a round cap of fur. He had on his feet tanned skins...(His)
face was covered with hair from here (the cheeks) to here (the chest).
He was a young man.. .he was carrying something in his right hand,
it rested on his (right) shoulder (a gun). In the other hand he
held a strong string which was fastened to the large animal (a horse)...following
him. On the back of the animal was a big thing (a saddle).
In 1900,Captain
Spott told these memories to his son Robert Spott, who, in 1931,
told them to David Rhys Jones,a retired college professor from Oregon.
