Wearing
Tribal Stone:
I wear a tribal stone..all the time...The wearer of this
stone is the possessor of the Yurok heritage at all times the stone
is worn. The Yurok believed he came from across the sea.. .he believed
in a sense of continuity. He believed an object passes from one
man to the next for thousands of years. I:79
Naming
of Captain Spott:
Spott acquired his name by a strange coincidence. Years
ago a ship put into Requa. The Indians overheard...their leader
(referred to) as Captain Scott. Not to be outdone, (they) had a
head man too! "We have Captain Spott." II:90-91
Importance
Of Harry Robert's Story:
"But someone should write Harry's story. It needs to
be written. It is important. Although nobody is ever going to believe
it!" I:93, Dr. Lee Sanella
Discovery
Of America:
The discovery of America may be regarded...as a unique
event, but....likewise .....as a long and multifarious process....The
unique event was the crossing of the Sea of Darkness in 1492....The
Discovery....was accomplished through a multitude of enterprises
in all quarters of the globe.
Two halves of
our planet had for the first time begun to come into contact.. .two
streams of human life, thenceforth to mingle together . . nothing
like it was ever done before, nothing like it can ever be done again.
I:203, John Fiske, Discovery of America
Yurok
Heritage:
The Yurok told me they had come to the New World from
straight across the ocean, not across the northern ice bridge."
I:207 Harry Roberts
MARK
TWAIN, Life on the Mississippi:
Day
by day they floated down the great bends, in the shadow of the dense
forests, and in time arrived at the mouth of the Arkansas... .the
whiteman and the red man struck hands and entertained each other...
then to the admiration of the savages, La Salle set up a cross with
the arms of France on it, and took possession of the whole country
for the king--in the cool fashion of the time-- while the priest
piously consecrated the robbery with a hymn. The priest explained
the mysteries of the faith "by signs," for the saving of the savages;
thus compensating them with possible possession in Heaven for the
certain ones on earth which they had just been robbed of... .Nobody
smiled at these colossal ironies... And there the first confiscation
cross was raised on the banks of the great river. I:239-240
