Listening:
The Whiteman only wants to hear his own answers. In his own way.
He never stops to hear anything else, so why does he bother to ask
the Indian about anything. For example, Professor Gifford at U.C.
Berkeley (in the 1930s) asked me to come to the University to translate
some discs he had recorded. Poker Bob had sung them. I told Gifford
that most Yurok songs had no words. Gifford would not believe me.
Poker Bobs actual words were from our songs of the thirties translated
into Yurok, for example, "Cuddle up a Little Closer." I never told
Gifford. I wouldn't cut Poker Bob out of a good deal.
The Whiteman
does not believe what the Indian says. Whiteman never says what
he means. The Indian was trained to. II:77, Harry Roberts
A Note On
Harry Robert's Door:
To
whom it may concern.
I've had a rough night.
Put your head in the door and yell.
If no answer come back at noon and yell like hell. I:83
Indian Fertility:
They damn near did exterminate the Indians. They didn't quite succeed.
Because he's corning back. They're damned fertile. II:226, Audrey
