Central Feature
of Ritual:
The central feature of ritual is the recitation of a formula. This
is a dialogue recounting the effect of an act or a series of acts
similar to those about to be performed.....to the end. What the
Yurok was actually doing was to recreate a spiritual pattern. Since
all things were composed of spirit, if Spirit Patterns are repeated,
then the end product also is repeated or recreated. Thus the central
feature is not the recitation of a formula, but the recreation of
a Spirit Pattern. I:194-195 Harry Roberts
Christians
& Christianity:
At the root of all justification for conquest and conversion lay
the assumption that Christians and Christianity had both the moral
right and legal authority to overspread the world. I:224, WILCOMB
